About Las Culturas del Sur de Ohio
Las Culturas del Sur de Ohio shares oral histories and contemporary lifeways of Guatemalans, Hondurans, Mexicans, Peruvians, Puerto Ricans, Salvadorans, Venezuelans, and individuals from other Latin American countries residing in southern Ohio through the launch of the inaugural Southern Ohio Folklife podcast. Las Culturas del Sur de Ohio draws on the Southern Ohio Folklife digital bilingual oral history archival collection of Latine folklife at the Center for Public History at Shawnee State University.
The collaborating artists for this project are Alex and Ariadna Bentley. Alex’s work can be found on Facebook at Arte Empírico - Empirical Art. Alex painted the logo for the podcast series, which was then created into a graphic image by Ariadna Bentley.
Las Culturas del Sur de Ohio is produced by Los Herederos (The Inheritors), a media arts non-profit organization dedicated to culture in the digital age. Los Herederos engages in research-based documentation for public consumption to produce projects, programs and services that address the realities of local culture, evolving communities, and an increasingly diasporadical immigrant experience. Las Culturas del Sur de Ohio is cross-published on the Latin@Stories podcast produced by Dr. Elena Foulis, whose Oral Narratives of Latin@s in Ohio archival collection at the Center for Folklore Studies at Ohio State University serves as the inspiration for our work.
Collaborating organizations on this project include Los Herederos, Center for Public History at Shawnee State University, Shawnee State University Department of Fine, Digital, and Performing Arts, and the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center.
This project is made possible by Mid Atlantic Arts’ Central Appalachia Living Traditions program.
